The Global Week for Action on NCDs 2025

It undoubtedly is. On 25 September 2025, world leaders will gather at the United Nations in New York for the fourth High-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases and the promotion of mental health and well-being. There they will decide whether to place the NCD agenda atop the list of global health priorities, fuelled by the necessary investment, or to continue promising to tackle the NCD agenda but falling far short of agreed targets.

The Global Week for Action on NCDs

The Global Week for Action on NCDs aims to slow the increasing burden of NCDs, thanks to the contributions of people everywhere. Actions can be big or small - the power of the Global Week for Action comes through collaboration across countries and sectors towards a common goal: reducing preventable death and illness and increasing health and equity around the world. Each year from 2020 to 2025, the Global Week for Action on NCDs will raise awareness about NCDs while focusing on a specific theme. 2024 is the Time to lead! We are communicating that we have only a small window of time to make real progress on NCDs. The fourth UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs (UNHLM) in September 2025 is where leaders’ pledges must become reality. It’s time to move from words to action. Together we can spark the necessary change for NCDs. It’s time to lead.

World Hypertension Day 2025

The Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Alliance Malawi has called upon all Malawians to take proactive steps in protecting themselves against hypertension, a condition that significantly contributes to the nation's health burden. The remarks have been made as Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating Hypertension Day, under the theme “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, and Live Longer,” According to a statement signed by Esther Nyirenda Project Officer for NCD Alliance, there is need for regular blood pressure checks, adopting a healthy diet low in salt and fat, engaging in regular physical activity, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption, managing stress and adhering to medical advice when under treatment. Nyirenda highlighted that non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, account for 32 percent of all deaths in Malawi, affecting both urban and rural communities. She stressed the need for collaborative efforts among health workers, local leaders, civil society, and policymakers to raise public awareness and expand access to quality blood pressure monitoring services. Nyirenda further noted that World Hypertension Day should serve not only as a day of reflection but also as a catalyst for action.
